Culture on the Flower-Riviera
Sea, mountains and steep rocks, which rise toweringly directly from the Tyrrhenian Sea in the northernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea. That is the fascinating landscape of Liguria, which will accompany and impress the visitor on his tour of this region which is rich in history and is today a dynamic region. The capital Genoa, one of the most important Mediterranean Sea ports and home of the great seafarer Christopher Columbus who discovered America, was already a powerful seaside town in the Middle Ages. As testimonies of this glorious past there are impressive buildings, elegant manor houses and excellent church buildings which fit in perfectly today with the modern city structure. Nature and art treasures are very much available in the other provinces of Liguria too (Imperia, La Spezia and Savona, two other important ports). There is an intact and thick Mediterranean Sea natural environment in the mountain countryside of Portofino and Cinqueterre; Portovenere on the other hand is a little gem from the Mediterranean Sea coast. Lastly, San Remo is part of the most famous Italian spas in which the popular Italian pop-song festival takes place every year. The marvelous Benedictine Cloister S. Fruttuoso in Camogli deserves special attention. However, yet many more important monuments of historical art await you.
